Very rare and important, collection of Ten, 1864, American Civil War Related Color Lithograph, Comic, CDV Size, Album Cards Game drawn on stone by famed American Artist and Illustrator Winslow Homer and published by Louis Prang. This fantastic collection of 10 Album Cards come with the remnants of their original, delicate paper envelope as well as the publisherâ??s advertising handbill which was issued with the Cards. The Cards are from the series of 24 â??Album Cardsâ? titled â??Life in Camp Parts 1 &2â? - these being 10 of the 12 Cards that made up â??Part 1â? of the Series. Each of the Cards measure approx. 2 3/8â? x 4â?. Issued to be inserted into CDV Photo Albums which were very popular at the time of the Civil War, these cards, along with lithographic portraits of Civil War Generals, cards featuring Flowers, Fruits, Birds, Mosses, Leaves, Butterflies, â??Funny Charactersâ?. etc. were sold under the general title of â??Prangâ??s Album Picturesâ?. What makes the Cards offered here of special interest was, not only the Civil War Camp Life subjects but also the fact that they were the work of Winslow Homer. Like much of Homer's Civil War work, this series focuses on incidents in the daily lives of soldiers, rather than on battle scenes. This was Homer's second collaboration with publisher Louis Prang, one of the greatest American chromolithographers. Homer likely enjoyed these opportunities to work on lithographic projects. While the wartime illustrations he produced for Harper's Weekly had brought him considerable recognition, he was not always pleased with how the woodblock cutters reproduced his artwork for publication. Since Homer drew directly on the lithograph stone, this medium offered him greater control over the final product. The Titles of the Ten Cards read as follows: 1. Upset His Coffee. 2. Stuck in the Mud. 3. Tossing in a Blanket. 4. Building Castles. 5. An Unwelcome Visit. 6. Hard Tack. 7. Late for Roll Call. 8. The Guard House. 9. Surgeons Call. 10. Water Call. These rare and wonderful Winslow Homer / Louis Prang Album Cards from the â??Life in Camp. Part 1â? series are in excellent, original condition. All 10 cards are clean, crisp and sound with no creases, tears or edge wear and all have razor sharp corners. Each Card is printed in 3 colors - black, light blue and a brick red / buff. The remnants of the original packaging includes the front and rear panels of the envelope - fully detached and worn at the edges. Printed text on the front panel reads â??Life in Camp / Part 1â? and â??Published by L. Prang & Co., Bostonâ?. The original Publisherâ??s Advertising Sheet measures approx. 3 ¾â? x 7 ¼â? and is printed on both sides. The Sheet is fully separated at the 2, horizontal folds. We have NEVER requested Feedback from our customers as we were taught that "fishing for compliments" was impolite but the new eBay Detailed Rating System has put us in a rather tight spot. Most buyers are unaware that eBay bases a monthly fee discount on a Seller's "Star" rating. A monthly average of "4.6 Stars" (in any one of the four "Star" categories) costs us approximately $400 in additional eBay Fees - that's $400 above what we would pay if we had a "4.8 Star" average in all 4 "Star" categories!! As a consequence we hope you do not find us rude to ask that if you are happy with our items, our service, and our packing & shipping please be sure to use the "Star" rating system and remember that a "5 Star" rating is the only way we can qualify for eBay's fee reduction program. , Powered by eBay Turbo Lister The free listing tool.
