Maxim: "Nil durum indigestum" Very fine condition, historiated initials throughout , rebound by using the old vellum with new leather bands. Some errased old marks on title page. Altogether very fine copy. First Edition in Italian of the first medieval work to treat of classical mythology. Written in Latin prose from 1360 onwards by the Italian author and poet Giovanni Boccaccio around 1366, the Genealogia deorum gentilium , known in English as On the Genealogy of the Gods of the Gentiles , is a mythography or encyclopedic compilation of the tangled family relationships of the classical pantheons of Ancient Greece and Rome. Drawing largely from Ovid, the author arranged this mythological encyclopedia of the Greco-Roman deities in geneological format, providing a mine of information for several generations of scholars and writers, including Chaucer.
